Reconciliation in Thailand: Elitist in Sync?
The red shirt just accepted a "Reconciliation Road-map" from the Thai prime minister Abhisit-with some conditions attached-and date of house dissolution still in question.
As the road map was proposed a great many "Elitist" in Thailand-immediately began criticizing Abhisit. As most countries-Thailand's elitist are basically political elitist, economic elitist, military elitist-and in Thailand case-added off course is the royalist elitist.
- The yellow shirt or royalist elitist now is on a collusion course with Abhisit.
- Political elitist, such as the close to defunct Democrat Party, is urging Abhisit not to cave in under threats.
- The economic elitist are in shock now-that the mere Abhisit talk of reconciliation-have caused the Thai stock market to jumped a whopping 30 points-indicating this is the way to go and not confrontation.
- The powerful Thai military elitist-appears to understand the risk involved with a hard line hawkish approach-ranging from a severe global image, to international criminal court, to the spread of the conflict country-wide.
What of the protesters?
One major concern with a key red strategist-is if this is just a set-up? After the terrorism charges, anti-royalism charges, the anti-religion charges-to the Chula Hospital set-up-this strategist worries that this talk of "Reconciliation" is yet just another in a series of alienating the reds from the public-to gain public support-for anything-such as another murdering spree.
The second concern stems from Abhisit's track record of keeping his word.
As the reds say, they would like the election commission to get involved with Abhisit's promise of a dissolution of parliament for an election-that is because at this point-Abhisit words carries very little credibility.
But the reds leaders say they welcomed talk of reconciliation.
The key to watch is how the different elite groups in Thailand react and how those reactions will impact on Abhisit.
- The bottom-line, at this point, is that the reds position and Abhisit position-still lies significant gaps-and both side flexibility are constraint by both their supporters.
