Prayuth's Warning
Yesterday (19th December), as 10s of 1000s of Red Shirts gathered for a completely peaceful demonstration at the now infamous Ratchaprasong intersection – the site most closely associated with the Bangkok Massacre of April and May 2010 which led to the deaths of 90+ Thai citizens – Thailand's generals were meeting in the shadows and formulating plans of their own.
At 8am this morning Bangkok time (20th December), just a few hours after the last Red Shirt protester had gone home, the hardline leader of the Thai military, General Prayuth delivered a message to his fellow Thais that was both unequivocal and shocking.
According to Thai Rath (Thailand's biggest selling national daily) General Prayuth was asked about the Red Shirt's plans to hold more protests over the coming months. His response? "The soldiers are ready to act."
We would like to deliver our own message to General Prayuth should he, or any other general decide, once again, to start shooting at unarmed Thai citizens – you will be held to account. Furthermore, threatening civilians with an armed response and murder only adds to the global consensus that the Thai regime are far too quick to pull out a gun and far too slow to call an election.
