Join the Union for Thai Democracy for an afternoon of presentations and discussion featuring Pavin Chachavalpongpun and Charnvit Kasetsiri.

Pavin Chachavalpongpun will present on the Thai monarchy and the future of Thai democracy. Pavin is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies at Kyoto University in Japan where he teaches courses on Southeast Asian politics and international relations in Asia. Pavin earned his Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies and is the author of two books: A Plastic Nation: The Curse of Thainess in Thai-Burmese Relations and Reinventing Thailand: Thaksin and His Foreign Policy. He is also the editor of the forthcoming book Good Coup Gone Bad: Thailand's Political developments Since Thaksin's Downfall. In 2011, Pavin led a nationwide campaign to free a political prisoner named Akong who was accused of Lèse-majesté; Akong was sentenced to 20 years in prison and died of cancer while in prison.

Charnvit Kasetsiri will present on the political crisis in Thailand and its effects on the ASEAN. Charnvit is a Professor Emeritus at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. Charnvit earned his Ph.D. in Southeast Asian History from Cornell University in 1972. At Thammasat University, he served as Lecturer of History from 1973 to 2001, he served as President in 1995-96, and he founded the Southeast Asian Studies Program in 2000. He has written approximately 200 articles and a number of publications on Thai and Southeast Asian History. He has launched a ‘Siam not Thailand’ campaign to rename the country to reflect the reality of its ethnicities, languages, and cultural identities. He is a co-author, along with Pavin Chachavalpongpun and Pou Sothirak, of the 2013 book Preah Vihear: A Guide to the Thai-Cambodian Conflict and Its Solutions.
